(More customer reviews)I needed an inverter to charge my laptop and cell phone in the car on road trips, and this one fit the bill nicely.I have tested it out in the car with my computer plugged in, and it works fine.It powered my computer and supplied plenty of current to charge the battery while I was using it.
This thing is smart.If you try to run it off the 12V accessory outlet in your car without running the engine, the inverter lets out a constant beep telling you that you're going to run down your battery if you continue.According to the manual, this beep could also mean that the voltage dropped below 11.0V.I didn't know which it was in my particular case, but as soon as I started the engine, the squeal stopped and it was happy to charge my computer.
The ground fault interruptor, overpower and underpower warnings, battery drain warnings, auto shut-off, the 12V DC pass-through, and the option to hook the inverter directly to your battery are all very very useful features on a solid product.Well worth the reasonable price you pay!

A word of warning: if you need an inverter, make SURE you look at the amperage needed to power whatever it is you want to plug in!This one supplies 1.74 amps, which is more than enough for most laptops, game consoles, cell phones, and portable TVs, but ALWAYS double check and make sure.If you want to plug in a small fridge, for example, check the power requirements to make sure this thing can supply enough current!You'll save yourself a lot of frustration if you are certain of what you are buying.

I highly recommend this inverter!It's worth every penny, and it feels and performs like a much more expensive unit.

(More customer reviews)I agree with previous reviewers who state this will not even power a small laptop.I have an Eee PC(is a very small laptop) and draws about 70watts of power... this inverter will not power it because of an over load fault... 200Watt inverter... I think not.

(More customer reviews)This inverter powered my MacBook Pro which draws 85 watts using the power plug in a box truck I rented. The plug tag and inverter label read up to 80 watts while the manual states up to 100 watts for the plug. The heavier gauge alligator clip cables are for higher wattage applications or you may blow your power port fuse. The alligator clips connect directly to the battery. If you permanently hardwire the inverter buy 6 gauge wire with a 50 amp fuse up to 6 feet long or 4 gauge wire over 6 feet.Both included cables are 3 feet (91 cm) long. Remember, Volts x Amps = Watts. The inverter draws 512 watts when output is 400 watts according to the label.Output is a stepped modified sine wave and NOT sinusoidal.

When the inverter fan comes on it is noticeable like a radio between stations at moderate volume (took me some miles before figuring it was the inverter).The housing stayed cool at 85 watts.

When Black & Decker fixes their dead links the manual may be available at [..] (search for PI400AB). Lowes and Home Depot were [..]for this inverter.

(More customer reviews)I just opened the package and haven't used this thing yet - so I can't comment on functionality - but I wanted to let others know that this unit DOES come with a cigarette lighter plug (as well as a set of alligator clips) that you can attach to the screw posts.

I wasted a couple bucks on a separate cigarette lighter plug when I ordered because the product information says nothing about coming with the cigarette lighter plug.

Oh - There is also a sticker on the cigarette lighter cable warning not to draw more than 150 watts when using it plugged into a lighter socket (use the alligator clips or your own custom wires to connect straight to the battery for full power)

(More customer reviews)I manage a field team and have to have my office in the truck.I used to try to have 12 volt adapters for all my gadgets.12 volt chargers are not usually smart chargers so if you leave your device plugged in beyond the battery's capacity it begins to cook and destroy its ability to hold a charge.Mobile device batteries are expensive, so you don't want to be replacing them unnecessarily.The 110 volt chargers are called smart chargers because they sense when the battery is at peak capacity and dials back to a maintenance level of input.At first I thought a converter would be too bulky but they can rest under a seat nicely or in my case under the drink tray. So there they are, all my adapters all plugged into two power strips with just the device end of the cords sticking up ready for easy access.The printer and laptop plugged into one power strip and everything else plugged into the other power strip.This way I can flip the rocker switch on the power strip not in use disconnecting it and its resident adapters while the other adapters are happily doing their jobs and avoid scuffling around on the floor of the truck trying to plug in the charger I need at the moment.(If you are going to be powering multiple adapters at once, you'll need to pay attention to the total wattage being used.)The added convenience of being able to plug in any transportable household appliance is just icing on the cake. Coffee anyone?(Don't be trying to power a 1000 watt microwave oven.Its an alternative power source for MOBILE battery powered products.)That said, it handles my printer and laptop simultaneously without stressing its capacity.With the Panasonic Toughbook CF29 laptop plugged in alone, the cooling fan doesn't even kick on in the inverter.

Note:The instruction book (yes I actually read them) said you shouldn't leave the converter plugged into your power port unattended as it can drain the car's battery even when the converter is turned off.From experience, I can tell you it only takes about an hour or a little more to deplete my truck's battery if the engine isn't running while this unit is powering my laptop, so...
